|
Camp Taylor is the only program of it's kind throughout Central & Northern California
providing young people from accross the United States with heart disease a medically supervised free summer camp experience. WHAT ARE CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS (CHD’S)? Congenital Heart Defects are structural problems with the
heart present at birth. They result when a mishap occurs during heart development soon after conception
and often before the mother is aware that she is pregnant.
HOW SERIOUS IS THE PROBLEM? CHD’s are the most common birth defect and the #1 cause of death from birth defects during
the first year of life. Nearly twice as many children die from CHD’s in the United States each year as die from all
forms of childhood cancers combined.
WHO
IS AT RISK TO HAVE A CHILD WITH A CHD? Anyone can have a child born with a CHD. Out of 1,000 births, 8 babies will have some form
of Congenital Heart Disorder.
HOW
MANY PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES HAVE A CHD? Estimates suggest that about 1,000,000 Americans have a CHD. Approximately
40,000 babies are born with a CHD each year.
